Speak Fondly Wins Gr2 Magic Night Stakes

Monday, 16th March 2015

At Rosehill Gardens in Sydney, ill-fated Widden Stud sire Northern Meteor (Encosta de Lago-Explosive, by Fappiano) added a Group success when 2YO filly Speak Fondly (Northern Meteor-Blab, by Flying Spur) scored by 0.1-length for trainer Gai Waterhouse in the $175,000 Gr2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) for 2YO fillies, over fellow fillies Perignon (Snitzel-Last Blaze, by Narita Brian) & Italy (Domesday-Retail Therapy, by Flying Spur). This was the first stakes victory for Speak Fondly who took her record to 1 win and 2 placings (including the Gr2 Sweet Embrace Stakes) from 3 starts for $151,700 earnings. Speak Fondly's owners, Gooree Stud, will wait until later in the week before deciding if the well bred filly will take her place in next week's Gr1 Golden Slipper at Rosehill. "Not in any rush to decide as she is paid up and we will likely wait to see how she pulls up from today before cementing a plan," said Gooree representative Monica Cummings. The Gooree-bred Speak Fondly is a half-sister to Gr2 Hobartville Stakes winner Wild And Proud from the stakes-winning Flying Spur mare Blab. This is also the family of champion filly Bounding Away, winner of six Gr1 races including the Golden Slipper and Australian Oaks, and Gr1 Metropolitan Handicap winner Glastonbury.
