Spillway Wins Gr1 Australian Cup
At Flemington in Melbourne, 5YO UK-bred entire Spillway (Rail Link-Flower Market, by Cadeaux Genereux) registered the first top-flight victory of his career when scoring by 0.1-length for trainers David Hayes & Tom Dabernig in the $1 million Gr1 Australian Cup (2000m) for 3YO+, over 8YO gelding and stable-mate Extra Zero (Danzero-Extra Bubbly, by Bellotto) & 7YO gelding Happy Trails (Good Journey-Madame Flurry, by Perugino). Spillway took his record to 5 wins (including the Gr3 Japan Racing Association Plate) and 5 placings (including the Gr2 PB Lawrence Stakes) from 22 starts for $902,811 earnings. Spillway, who Hayes has always maintained was a Gr1 calibre horse, prevailed by the narrowest of margins to defeat evergreen stable-mate Extra Zero in a photo finish and give Hayes his first Gr1 winner in four years. "It was the most pleasant photo I've been involved in for a while," Hayes said. "Old Extra Zero nearly upset the apple cart." He added, "He (Spillway) has been running thirds and fourths all the time and I thought knocking on the door. I just asked Michael (jockey Michael Walker) to make him arrive inside the clock tower and he did and he was good enough to hang on."
