Tarquin Wins Gr2 Pago Pago Stakes
At Rosehill Gardens in Sydney, Gr1-winning Darley shuttler & 2007 Gr1 Kentucky Derby runner-up Hard Spun (Danzig-Turkish Tryst, by Turkoman) added a Group success when 2YO Godolphin colt Tarquin (Hard Spun-Daanet Al Dunya, by Rahy) scored by 0.8-length for trainer John O'Shea and jockey William Buick in the $175,000 Gr2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) for 2YO c&g, over fellow colts Rageese (Street Cry-Rabsha, by Dehere) & Odyssey Moon (Snitzel-Run to the Moon, by Arch). This was the first stakes victory for Tarquin who took his record to 2 wins from 2 starts for $118,950 earnings. Tarquin's victory also represented a milestone for UK-based jockey William Buick, who celebrated his first winner on Australian soil. "John (O'Shea) and the whole team have been great to us. I'm very pleased I can repay what they've done for us," Buick told TVN. "He's a lovely horse. He's still immature. Going the right way. He's a miler in the making. He had plenty left at the line." O'Shea said Tarquin would likely miss next's Golden Slipper to be saved for the Gr1 Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) and Gr1 Champagne Stakes (1600m). "I think Tarquin's got a very, very bright future. Going forward into the Sires Produce and the Champagne he'll be quite effective," O'Shea said. Tarquin is sure to appreciate more ground, being out the US-bred Rahy mare Daanet Al Dunya, a full sister to 7-time Gr1 winner Fantastic Light. This is a prolific stakes producing family that includes North American Gr1 winners Seaside Attraction (Kentucky Oaks), Square Angel (EP Taylor Stakes), Dancing On A Cloud (Beverly D Stakes), Golden Attraction (Frizette, Matron Stakes) and Cape Town (Florida Derby).
