Lucia Ready To Peak: Lees

Wednesday, 18th March 2015

Broadmeadow trainer Kris Lees says he expects outstanding mare Lucia Valentina to be at peak fitness for Saturday's Gr1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill. The dual Gr1-winning 4YO has had two runs thus far this campaign, finishing fourth behind Contributer when resuming in the Gr2 Apollo Stakes on 14 February, before finishing a disappointing ninth behind that same galloper in the Gr1 Chipping Norton Stakes at Warwick Farm three weeks ago. "She's really well. Her second-up run was consistent with her previous two second-up runs with me. She raced a little flat...however she has worked really well since," Lees told RSN radio. "She had a really good gallop this morning (Tuesday), without being put under any pressure, on the course proper at Newcastle. She heads to the Ranvet Stakes in pretty good condition. "I'm hoping we get a similar result as we have previously third run in." Lees said that Lucia Valentina's primary autumn target remained the $4 million Gr1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on 11 April. "At this stage she will go to the Queen Elizabeth," he said. "She's nominated for the Doncaster and also the Queen of the Turf, but at this stage we're pretty committed to going to the Queen Elizabeth."
