Laser Hawk Wins Gr3 Newmarket Handicap

Thursday, 19th March 2015

At Newcastle in the NSW Hunter, US Gr1-winning Emirates Park shuttler Artie Schiller (El Prado-Hidden Light, by Majestic Light) added a Group success when6YO gelding Laser Hawk (Artie Schiller-High Heels, by Canny Lad) scored by 1-length for trainer Joseph Pride in the $125,000 Gr3 Newmarket Handicap (1400m) for 3YO+, over 6YO mare Scorpio Queen (Choisir-Lyford, by Royal Academy) & 5YO gelding Mighty Lucky (Casino Prince-Buxom Babe, by Octagonal). Remarkably this was the first victory for Laser Hawk since winning the 2012 Gr1 Rosehill Guineas, where he defeated star Kiwis Ocean Park and Silent Achiever. The Gooree homebred, who is a half-brother to six-time Gr1 winner Desert War from the wonderful producer High Heels, took his record to 5 wins and 4 placings (including the Gr1 Randwick Guineas and Gr1 Australian Derby) from 14 starts for $711,750 earnings. Laser Hawk is entered in several feature races during The Championships, but trainer Joe Pride said he would wait to see how he comes through this race before making any decisions. "I am just happy to get an old horse like this back in the winner's circle," Pride said. "With all respect to his opposition here they are mostly out of restricted grade and this old bloke is a Group 1 winner. It comes in pretty handy when you only have to give them four or five kilos." He added, "He is in the Doncaster, he is in the Queen Elizabeth and we will just take him along and see how he pulls up from today."
