Return Imminent For Smart Kiwi Mare
English-bred mare El Sagrado (Azamour-El Laoob, by Red Ransom) is making all the right moves as she prepares to resume her New Zealand career, reports NZ Racing Desk. The 4YO hasn't raced since she made an impressive winning debut at Ruakaka in January last year, where she defeated the handy Ultraviolet by 2.5-lengths. "She's had a few issues since, but that might turn out to be a blessing being a Northern Hemisphere-bred filly," trainer Tony Pike said. "She has got a lot of ability and she'll probably kick off at Ellerslie on March 28 in a Rating 65 over 1200 metres." A daughter of Azamour raced by breeders Raffles Farm, El Sagrado recently won a 1000 metre open trial at Rotorua. El Sagrado is from the stakes placed Red Ransom mare El Laoob, one of several broodmares purchased by Raffles Farm owner Dato Yap Kim San in December 2010 when acquiring some well bred European mares for his local broodmare band. El Laoob is now among the most valuable mares at Raffles Farm with her progeny including the Pulpit mare Pachattack, a dual Gr3 winner in the US who is also Gr1-placed.
