California Chrome Has Final World Cup Hit-Out
With exercise rider Dana Barnes in the saddle, reigning US Horse of the Year California Chrome had his final hit-out for Saturday night's US$10 million Gr1 Dubai World Cup when breezing a half mile early Tuesday morning on Meydan's main track, reports bloodhorse.com. "He got the last eighth in 11 seconds," said Alan Sherman, assistant trainer to his father Art. "We just wanted to stretch his legs. If he's not fit by now, it's too late." He added, "He's not a real heavy horse but I do think he's grown into his 4-year-old season and that he's a lot stronger," Sherman said. "I'm just glad the owners (Steve Coburn and Perry Martin) decided to run him another year." Jockey Victor Espinoza, who has been aboard California Chrome his last 11 runs, will once again take the ride in Saturday night's big race.
