Derby Still The Goal For Mongolian Khan
Mongolian Khan (Holy Roman Emperor-Centafit, by Centaine) will line up in the Gr1 Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick on 4 April despite a disappointing performance in last weekend's Rosehill Guineas, reports theinformant.co.nz. The New Zealand Derby winner made little impression in his Australian debut, when finishing fifth (beaten more than six lengths) behind fellow Kiwi Volkstok'n'barrell whom he had beaten at their two previous meetings. "It was obviously a pretty disappointing run and not up to his true form," co-trainer Andrew Forsman said. "We were trying to freshen him a bit for the step down to 2000 metres and perhaps that didn't work out." However Forsman, who trains in partnership with Murray Baker, is confident Mongolian Khan can show his true ability when he steps back up to the 2400m. "He'll definitely carry on towards the Derby," Forsman said. "He's a good stayer and 2400 metres should suit him better."
