Protectionist Ready To Show Best
Trainer Kris Lees has provided an update on Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist who will have his third run this campaign in Saturday's Gr1 The BMW (2400m) at Rosehill. Speaking to RSN's Shane Anderson, Lees said that he expects the German-bred stayer to show significant improvement after unplaced efforts in the Gr2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) and the Gr1 Australian Cup (2000m). "He's come on well from his two runs in Melbourne. Although he never got into those races, they were run at a good tempo and its given him a good foundation for his next two runs," Lees said. "He had a good blow out last Saturday. It was probably the best he's worked since he's been in my care. His last 600m was quite impressive. I think he's down to his correct fighting weight, so to speak, and I think he's ready to show his best." Lees confirmed that Protectionist would head to the $1.6 million Gr1 Sydney Cup (3200m) at Royal Randwick on 11 April if he performed well on Saturday.
