Smart Strike Euthanised

Friday, 27th March 2015

Two-time champion North American sire Smart Strike was euthanised at Lane's End Farm near Lexington, Kentucky on Wednesday after succumbing to laminitis, reports bloodhorse.com. The 23YO son of Mr Prospector and Canadian Hall of Fame mare Classy 'n Smart had a highly successful career at stud, siring 113 stakes winners, including 12 champions, four Breeders' Cup winners, and two Classic winners. "We are very saddened by the loss of Smart Strike." said William Farish, owner of Lane's End Farm. "He has been one of our flagship stallions for many years. He was an exceptional sire and his influence on the breed will be felt for a long time. I want to thank Sam-Son Farm for entrusting us with his stallion career, as well as the other shareholders and breeders (who) have supported him." His stud career ranks among the sport's best on the track and in the sales ring. Retired from racing in 1997 as a Gr1 winner of the Philip H Iselin Handicap at Monmouth Park, Smart Strike is credited with US$118,652,193 million in progeny earnings to date. His best performed offspring include dual Horse of the Year and leading sire Curlin, six-time Gr1 winner and sire English Channel, champion colt and young Coolmore sire Lookin At Lucky, and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner My Miss Aurelia. He will be buried at Lane's End Farm.
