Beholder Wins Gr1 Clement L Hirsch Stakes

Monday, 3rd August 2015

At Del Mar in the US, champion 5YO mare Beholder claimed the seventh top-flight victory of her illustrious career when cruising to an effortless 7-length win in the US$300,000 Gr1 Clement L Hirsch Stakes (8.5 furlongs) for 3YO+ f&m, over fellow 5YO mares Yahilwa (Medaglia d'Oro-Verbanella, by Smart Strike) & Warren's Veneda (Affirmative-More Cal Bread, by Flying Continental). The dual Eclipse Award winner took her remarkable record to 13 wins (including the Gr1 Breeders' Cup Distaff, Gr1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies & Gr1 Zenyatta Stakes - twice) and 3 placings from 18 starts for US$3,656,600 earnings. "Her acceleration just put us in front without really trying. The race was effectively over at the 6 1/2 (furlong pole)," Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens told Blood Horse. Trainer Richard Mandella said that Beholder may now take on the boys in the US$1 million Gr1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar on 22 August. "She's done so much for us, we need to consider the most likely scenario is to be conservative and wait for the Zenyatta (Stakes Sept. 26 at Santa Anita Park), but we may look at the Pacific Classic here in three weeks if she looks strong enough," Mandella said.
