Hughes Bows Out A Champion

Monday, 3rd August 2015

Three-time champion British jockey Richard Hughes said he was "overwhelmed" by the warm reception he received from colleagues and the sizable crowd at Glorious Goodwood on Saturday as his distinguished career finally drew to a close, reports Racing Post. Although there was no winner, and therefore no fairytale ending, for Hughes on his final day in the saddle, it seemed not to matter to the 42YO who will now embark on a new career as a trainer perhaps as early as the autumn. "I got an amazing reception, which I didn't expect," Hughes told Racing Post. "It was wonderful. I'm just glad I got through the day without getting too emotional. I did out on the track a little bit but I've had a fabulous day." He added: "I didn't have a winner but I've been overwhelmed by the whole thing. It was absolutely brilliant." After a career spanning 27 years, Hughes hangs up his saddle having ridden 31 Royal Ascot winners, two British Classics, numerous other Gr1 victories and a reputation as one of the most talented and stylish jockeys of his generation, reports Sky Sports.
