Lauderdale Wins Gr1 Thekwini Stakes

Monday, 3rd August 2015

At Greyville in South Africa, 3YO filly Lauderdale (Elusive Fort-Tropicool, by Western Winter) landed the biggest win of her career when scoring by a neck for trainer Duncan Howell in the R600,000 Gr1 Thekwini Stakes (1600m), over fellow fillies Melliflora (Querari (GER) 2006 out of Malata Beach, by (SAF) 2004, by Count Dubois) & the unlucky Persian Rug (Ideal World-Queen of Persia, by Fort Wood). Persian Rug, who led for most of the race, cost herself certain victory when digging her heels in at the 200m and losing her stride. However, the honours went to Lauderdale who took her record to 2 wins and 3 placings from 7 starts for just under R5000 earnings. Note: The Gold Cup meeting was postponed to Saturday 1st August due to heavy rains the weekend prior. Hence, although Lauderdale is now a 3YO the Thekwini Stakes is usually run in the final week of July for 2YO fillies.
