Alpine Eagle To Trial This Friday
Exciting galloper Alpine Eagle (High Chaparral-Zephyria, by Zabeel) will step up his spring carnival preparation with a barrier trial at Morphettville on Friday, reports horseracing.com.au. The High Chaparral colt emerged as a potential star in the autumn when scoring a stunning win in the Gr2 Autumn Classic (1800m) before finishing a close second behind Wandjina in the Gr1 Australian Guineas (1600m). Trainer Tony McEvoy says he is pleased with Alpine Eagle's progress as he embarks on a campaign aimed at the Gr1 Cox Plate in October. "He's put on quite a bit of weight and you can really tell he's gone from three to four," McEvoy told AAP. "He's strengthened and thickened up. I'm very happy with him." McEvoy said Alpine Eagle's barrier trial performance will determine whether he kicks off in the Gr2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 15 or the Gr1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 29. "Sometimes they can get a bit quicker between their three-to-four-year-old days and that will determine to me how far I run him over," McEvoy said. "At the moment I'm thinking 1400m and either of the PB Lawrence or the Memsie."
