Lightinthenite Wins Darwin Cup

Tuesday, 4th August 2015

Former Sydney galloper Lightinthenite (Galileo-Tiffin, by Grand Lodge) made a one act affair of the Northern Territory's premier race when running out an emphatic winner of the $200,000 Darwin Cup (2000m) at Fannie Bay yesterday. The 8YO son of champion European racehorse and sire Galileo smashed Club Liquid's record time of 2:01.22 set in 2008 by a whole second when romping to an impressive 9-length win over Royal Request and Pretty Blonde. "He's a lovely dirt horse and all credit to [trainer] Gary Clarke for training him up as well as he has this year," winning jockey Hugh Bowman said. "I'm a country boy at heart and to come up here - I've had a wonderful year in Sydney with nine Gr1s and the Sydney premiership - really caps off a wonderful season for me." Clarke, celebrating his first Darwin Cup winner, said: "You're always nervous when you see them that far in front but I looked behind and nothing else was making ground and he hit the line full of running." Lightinthenite took his record to 8 wins from 33 starts for $622,000 earnings.
