Criterion Gallop Raises Eyebrows
Globe-trotting local galloper Criterion (Sebring-Mica's Pride, by Bite The Bullet) has put in an exceptional piece of track work in the UK, reports theguardian.com. Ridden by leading hoop William Buick, Criterion was given a searching run over a mile over the July Course. Buick said after the gallop, "He needed it but coming to the racecourse and having a good blowout, I think that will have done him the world of good." A multiple Gr1 winner of over $6 million, the New Zealand-owned entire captured the Gr1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick before leapfrogging via Hong Kong's Gr1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup (3rd) on his way to the Gr1 Prince Of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot where he finished fifth. Expected to be among the hardest to beat in 2015's Gr1 Cox Plate, Criterion is being aimed at the Gr1 Juddmonte International at York in two week's where his task won't be any easier with the opposition expected to include the world's second highest rated racehorse, Golden Horn. Currently in the care of Golden Horn's trainer John Gosden, Criterion has been quoted at the tempting odds of 33/1 for his next assignment.
