Distance Might Stop Take Charge From Taking Charge
The Gr1 Test Stakes for 3YO fillies at Saratoga in New York State is one of two Gr1 events at the track this weekend – the Whitney Stakes is the other – and sees the return of trainer D. Wayne Lukas' star filly Take Charge Brandi. Champion US Juvenile Filly last year with two Gr1 wins, Take Charge Brandi has been off the scene since her last victory on January 31 due to a bone-chip injury. Armed with a beautiful pedigree, she is by Giant's Causeway out of Charming, a half-sister to Champion US 3YO colt Will Take Charge and Gr1 winner Take Charge Indy. The trio are out of multiple Gr1-winning Dehere mare Take Charge Lady. Aside from her exceptional opposition, Take Charge Brandi's biggest hurdle could be the 7 furlong distance, which is short of her best. According to bloodhorse.com, Lukas noted, "Seven-eighths (of a mile) is not ideal for her. I think she's a better two-turn filly, but the distance is probably better for a comeback race." Take Charge Brandi was sold at Keeneland September (see below) for what now seems a bargain at US$435,000.
