Lake Geneva Casts Monkey Off Her Back
At Hawkesbury west of Sydney yesterday, Australia's highest profile Maiden galloper Lake Geneva (Fastnet Rock-Hips Don't Lie, by Stravinsky) cast off the shackles of her non-winner status with a comprehensive victory. Kept out of trouble and racing one out, one back, the dual Gr1-placed juvenile was ridden hands and heels until the last 150 metres when she was given a hurry up. Never really asked to extend by Tommy Berry and wanting to look around once she'd hit the front, Lake Geneva won as a $1.05 chance should. Co-trainer Michael Hawkes was pleased with her effort, saying that the valuable filly would head towards the Silver Shadow Stakes in the short term before looking at bigger targets for the Spring. Hawkes told Sky Racing, "It was a nice run, it was a starting point... it's not where you start, it's where you finish."
