Honor Code Wins Gr1 Whitney Stakes

Monday, 10th August 2015

At Saratoga racecourse in the US, 4YO ridgling Honor Code (A.P. Indy-Serena's Cat, by Storm Cat) made it successive top-flight victories when scoring by a neck for trainer Shug McGaughey in the US$1.25 million Gr1 Whitney Stakes (9 furlongs) for 3YO+, over 4YO entires Liam's Map (Unbridled's Song-Miss Macy Sue, by Trippi) & Tonalist (Tapit-Settling Mist, by Pleasant Colony). This was the second Gr1 victory for Honor Code who took his record to 6 wins (including the Gr1 Metropolitan Handicap & Gr2 Remsen Stakes) and 2 placings from 9 starts for US$1,978,260 earnings. "It was a spectacular race by a spectacular horse," trainer Shug McGaughey told Blood Horse. "People have always held him in high regard, but they wondered if he could run around two turns. He has got some quirks about him, so the question was whether he could overcome them. I guess he answered all that today." Honor Code's victory earned him an automatic entry into the Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland on 31 October.
