8th Gr1 Winner For Cornerstone's Dalakhani
A strong late flourish from the Luca Cumani trained Second Step saw him power to victory in the Gr1 Grosser Preis von Berlin at Hoppegarten, Germany, on Sunday. He becomes the 8th career Gr1 winner for Cornerstone Stud shuttle-stallion Dalakhani. Under jockey Jamie Spencer, Second Step got on top in the final 50m of the 125th running of the 2400m Gr1 to score by three-parts of a length from front-runner Ito, with recent German Derby winner Nutan another three-quarters of a length back in third. Already a Group 2 winner and placegetter at that level on his only two starts this year, Second Step is likely to run next in the Group I Irish St Leger. A trip to Melbourne in the spring should not be ruled out. Like Dalakhani's Group I Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Reliable Man, Second Step is also out of a mare by Sadler's Wells. Dalakhani is the sire of 44 stakes-winners and 8.7% stakes-winners to runners in his career to date. A Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner and European Champion Racehorse, he has filled his limited book of mares in each of his first two seasons at Cornerstone Stud in South Australia. The leading shuttle stallion by European stakes winners in 2014, Dalakhani will return again this spring and is expected to arrive back on the farm later this week.
