Driver To Miss Makfi

Tuesday, 11th August 2015

Designated Driver's (Danroad-Smashed All Night, by Night Shift) unexplained aversion to her home track was a contributing factor in her being left out of contention for the Gr1 Makfi Challenge Stakes at the end of the month, reports NZ Racing Desk. "We did have her in, but it was always going to be a bit of a longshot," Hastings co-trainer Sue Thompson said. "She's had two runs at 1400 metres here and she's gone horrible both times. She's pulled her block off – it's quite a weird thing and we don't know why she's been like that." She added: "She's raced well at Trentham, Ellerslie and Wanganui and if the Makfi had been anywhere else than Hastings we might have considered it." Designated Driver hasn't raced since her fast-finishing second behind Sacred Star in the Gr1 The Telegraph in January. "She was quite big when she came back from a spell, but she's good in herself and nice and bright," Thompson said. "We're quite happy and she'll probably kick off over 1200 metres at Wanganui on September 5. She'll definitely be aimed at The Telegraph again."
