North American Gr1 winner Moreno (Ghostzapper-Danceinthesunlight, by A.P. Indy) has been retired after finishing down the track in Saturday's Whitney Stakes at Saratoga, reports Blood Horse. Last year's Whitney Stakes winner was looking to make it back-to-back victories in the US$1.25 million feature on the weekend but disappointed when finishing eighth (beaten 2.75-lengths) behind the in-form Honor Code. Trainer Eric Guillot said the time was right for Moreno to bow out of racing with the 5YO son of Ghostzapper having won just once in the past year when taking the Gr2 Charles Town Classic in April. "When it's that time, it's that time," Guillot said. "When they can't compete at that level...he's been too good to us to gamble and get him hurt. He's too good of a horse to not do right by him. He's too good of a horse to run him into the ground." Moreno retires with 4 wins and 13 placings from 29 starts for US$2.99 million prize money.
