My Sanctuary Off The Mark

Thursday, 13th August 2015

Beautifully bred mare My Sanctuary opened her account at William Hill Park (Sandown) yesterday when scoring a strong win in the Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa Plate over 1400m. The Northern Hemisphere-bred 4YO was allowed to settle midfield by jockey Chris Parnham before producing a powerful finish down the centre of the track to score by 0.2-length over Northern Showdown and Tessabelle. "She's a beautifully bred horse and she has good ability as well so hopefully she can go it with it," trainer Darren Weir said. Raced in the red and white silks of owner Paul Fudge's Waratah Thoroughbreds, the UK-bred My Sanctuary is by outstanding British sire Oasis Dream out of champion European mare Albanova. Fudge purchased My Sanctuary for 450,000 guineas at the 2012 Tattersalls December Foal Sale from the draft of Newmarket-based St Simon Stud (part of Lanwades Stud). Crowned German Horse of the Year in 2004, the outstanding Albanova (Alzao- Alouette, by Darshaan) won 7 of her 11 starts including three at Gr1 level in the Deutschland Preis, Rheinland Pokal der Stadtsparkasse, and the Preis von Europa. Albanova is a sister to dual Gr1 Champion Stakes winner and Champion 3YO Irish Filly Alborada, and a three-quarter-sister to dual Gr2 winning mare Last Second (Alzao), dam of dual Gr1-winning former Coolmore shuttler Aussie Rules (Danehill). My Sanctuary is actually a direct descendant of one of the most important broodmares of the 20th Century in Mumtaz Mahal. One of the Aga Khan's foundation mares, Mumtaz Mahal's influence on the thoroughbred breed has been tremendous with some of her most notable descendants including Mahmoud, Nasrullah, Royal Charger, Abernant, Petite Etoile, and Shergar.
