Japonisme Wins Gr3 San Domenico Stakes
At Rosehill Gardens in Sydney, multiple Gr1-winning shuttler & former star Australian sprinter Choisir (Danehill Dancer-Great Selection, by Lunchtime) added a Group success when 3YO gelding Japonisme (Choisir-Haiku, by Encosta de Lago) scored by 0.5-length for trainer Chris Waller in the $125,000 Gr3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) for 3YOs, over 3YO colt King's Troop (Redoute's Choice-Royal Snippets, by Royal Academy) & fellow 3YO gelding Haptic (Exceed and Excel-Troubeaut, by Beautiful Crown). This was the first stakes victory for Japonisme who took his record to 4 wins and 2 placings from 7 starts for $259,465 earnings. "I said earlier in the week that if he wins I think we have a Gr1 horse on our hands, but if we don't I won't be too disappointed because I still think that he has a bit of maturing to do," Waller told Sky Racing. "That is quite exciting and he actually looked better today than he did last start, which is a good sign if we did want to give him another run or two." Waller indicated that he was more likely to freshen Japonisme for the Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington on Derby day rather than press on to the Golden Rose next month. A homebred for the Ingham family, Japonisme is out of the Encosta de Lago mare Haiku and hails from the family of New Zealand Oaks winner Tapildo and Gr2 Silver Slipper Stakes winner Plagiarize.
