Protectionist Steps Out At Newcastle

Wednesday, 19th August 2015

Trainer Kris Lees has provided an update on the progress of Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist (Monsun-Patineuse, by Peintre Celebre) who galloped between races at Newcastle yesterday. The German-bred stayer, who hasn't raced since pulling up sore in the Gr1 Sydney Cup in April, is set to resume in the Gr2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on 5 September. "We just wanted to bring him for a day out," Lees told Sky Thoroughbred Central. "He's only had one trial so we just wanted to get him in a bit of a raceday environment." Lees said that he is pleased with how Protectionist is progressing leading into the spring. "I'm pretty happy with where he's at this preparation," he said. "Physically he seems fine. After every gallop we are very cautious but at this stage he appears a happier horse but the proof will be in the pudding on raceday."
