Arabian Queen Wins Gr1 Juddmonte International Stakes
At York in the UK overnight, Darley's three-time Gr1-winning world-class former shuttler Dubawi (Dubai Millennium-Zomaradah, by Deploy) celebrated a Gr1 success when 3YO filly Arabian Queen (Dubawi-Barshiba, by Barathea) pulled off one of the biggest upsets in recent times when scoring by a neck for trainer David Elsworth in the Gr1 Juddmonte International Stakes (10 furlongs) for 3YO+, over 3YO colt Golden Horn (Cape Cross-Fleche d'Or, by Dubai Destination) & 4YO entire The Grey Gatsby (Mastercraftsman-Marie Vison, by Entrepreneur). Arabian Queen took her record to 4 wins (including the Gr3 Princess Elizabeth Stakes) and 1 placing from 11 starts for £686,127 earnings. Arabian Queen's owner Jeff Smith told Racing Post: "She's a filly on an upward curve. I've been boring people by telling them that before this race no-one knew if the three-year-old fillies were as good as the three-year-old colts as they hadn't met. She's right up there with the fillies so we thought we'd give it a go." On future plans he added: "She's bred for a mile and a half so we are in the [British Champions] Fillies And Mares at Ascot so that would probably be it for the year and next year possibly train her for the Arc." The shock of the race was obviously the defeat of the previously unbeaten Golden Horn with jockey Frankie Dettori commenting: "The horse was more keen than usual today." He added: "He was going to the King George and missed it so came here a bit fresh today. I was expending a lot of energy trying to hold him and he couldn't use his turn of foot in that ground at the end." Golden Horn is expected to continue to head towards the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in October.
