Lucia Valentina On Track For Tramway
Trainer Kris Lees has confirmed that star mare Lucia Valentina (Savabeel-Staryn Glenn, by Montjeu) will launch her Cox Plate campaign in the Gr2 Tramway Stakes at Randwick on 5 September. "She's had one barrier trial and she will trial again on Monday here at Newcastle," Lees told Melbourne radio station RSN yesterday. "She will start off on a similar path and race in the Tramway, the race she won first-up last year, after which we haven't tied down which way we will go with her. She may go to the George Main [Gr1] or there are a couple of other options for her." He added: "More than likely we will head on a path towards the Cox Plate and if she is up to that level that's the way we will go." Lees conceded the dual Gr1-winning daughter of Savabeel was slightly disappointing in the autumn but he is confident she can return to her brilliant best this preparation. "She didn't quite come up as well in the autumn, but that was her first time around at weight-for-age and she is a little more seasoned and I think that's a nice race to target for her," he said. "She has certainly strengthened quite a lot. She is probably 15-20kgs heavier. I'm pretty happy with where she's at, at the moment."
