Wise Dan Nears Return

Thursday, 20th August 2015

Two-time US Horse of the Year Wise Dan moved a step closer to his comeback to racing in next month's Gr1 Woodbine Mile when breezing on the dirt at Keeneland on Monday, reports Blood Horse. The 8YO son of Wiseman's Ferry has been off the scene since a non-displaced fracture of his fetlock at the bottom of his right front cannon bone was discovered following his second victory in the Gr1 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland last October. The Charlie LoPresti-trained galloper has now turned in five pieces of work since returning to training in July as he builds towards a shot at a third Breeder's Cup Mile title on his home track on October 31. "He worked very well," LoPresti said. "We put a horse in front of him and he caught him; he was full of run the last part, he galloped out a long ways. We pressed him pretty good. I wanted to get a real good work in him, and he finished out real strong." LoPresti said Wise Dan would have one final medical check-up before heading to Woodbine. "He's got probably two more works and then I'll take him to Dr. (Larry) Bramlage right before he goes to Woodbine. That gives me a little bit more time with him; he's got an appointment the first week of September with Dr. Bramlage." He added: "It [the Woodbine Mile] is a 'Win and You're In' Breeders' Cup race, it's not a handicap...there's a lot of things that make sense about running there."
