Ireland Winner For Sir Peter Vela

Friday, 21st August 2015

New Zealand's Sir Peter Vela had a winner in Ireland on Wednesday night when well bred filly Assume won on debut at Killarney. Racing in the familiar blue and white colours of Vela's Pencarrow Stud, the 3YO Irish-bred daughter of Fastnet Rock scored by three-quarters of a length for trainer David Wachman in a 3YO+ maiden over 1700m. Racing Post described the win thus: "Chased leaders, 5th halfway, improved behind leaders travelling well 2f out, switched right and not much room briefly between horses over 1f out, quickened well in 3rd inside final furlong to lead final 75yds, readily." Purchased by BBA Ireland on behalf of Vela for €280,000 at the 2013 Goffs Orby Yearling Sale, Assume is out of the Machiavellian mare Alsharq and is a half-sister to Italian stakes winner Sandreamer (Oasis Dream). This is also the family of French Derby runner-up and successful Australian sire Twig Moss.
