Shalaa Wins Gr1 Prix Morny

Monday, 24th August 2015

At Deauville in France, former European Champion First Season Sire & Chatswood Stud shuttler Invincible Spirit (Green Desert-Rafha, by Kris) celebrated a Gr1 success when outstanding 2YO colt Shalaa (Invincible Spirit-Ghurra, by War Chant) scored by 2-lengths for trainer John Gosden in the Gr1 Prix Morny (1200m) for 2YOs, over fellow 2YO colt Gutaifan (Dark Angel-Alikhlas, by Lahib) & 2YO filly Tourny (Country Reel-Maka, by Slickly). This was a brilliant victory by Shalaa who took his record to 4 wins (including the Gr2 July Stakes & Gr2 Richmond Stakes) from 5 starts. It was also the second successive Prix Morny victory for Shalaa's owners Al Shaqab racing, who won the 2014 edition of the race with retired Starspangledbanner colt The Wow Signal. Shalaa's victory stamped him as the best juvenile in Europe, a rating winning jockey Frankie Dettori certainly endorsed after the race. "I didn't want to say before he had won a Group 1 but he is the best two-year-old I have ridden," Dettori said in an interview with French TV channel Equidia. "It was heavy ground but his class got him through. He is better on good ground." Trainer John Gosden said Shalaa would now head towards the Gr1 Middle Park Stakes (6 furlongs) at Newmarket on 26 September. "He's a horse who has a great mind. It is a pleasure to train him. All credit to the owner for having the courage to run. We'll look to the Middle Park now," he said.
