Tramway Next For Rudy

Tuesday, 25th August 2015

The Gr1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Royal Randwick on 3 October has been confirmed as the primary spring target of talented Queensland galloper Rudy (Red Dazzler-Go on Now Go, by Success Express) after his encouraging return to racing at Doomben on Saturday. The Gr2 Villiers Stakes winner indicated he was on track for a prosperous spring campaign when resuming with a fast-finishing third behind Cum Dividend in the Jim Barry Coverdrive Handicap over 1350m. Rudy will now head to the Gr2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on 5 September where he will clash with the likes of dual Gr1 winning mare Lucia Valentina. "I was delighted with him. I think a lot of people were expecting him to win but the thing is he had a big weight and was first-up," trainer Helen Page told Melbourne's Radio Sport National yesterday. "The pace of the race really suited the leader who was able to dictate and then skip away, but I was delighted with the way he [Rudy] got to the line." She added: "The next run is the Tramway over 1400 metres at Randwick. It starts getting a bit more serious for him then." Page said the plan was for Rudy to do most of his spring racing in Sydney, but added a trip to Melbourne was also a possibility as long as the horse was in form. "A fortnight after the Tramway he may run in the Bill Ritchie rather than the George Main and then the Epsom after that hopefully," she said. "We will consider Melbourne too as long as everything goes to plan prior." Rudy's best performance at Gr1 level was in last season's Doncaster Mile at Randwick where he finished a creditable fourth to the Chris Waller-trained Kermadec.
