Australian Derby Winner Back From Injury
Gr1 winner Ethiopia (Helenus-Shona, Spectrum) will make a low-key return from injury in a Benchmark 90 handicap over 1400m at Sandown today, reports Racing.com. The former Australian Derby winner, who has been sidelined since suffering a ligament injury in the Gr3 Bart Cummings Quality (2500m) at Flemington in October, has been given a slow build-up for his return with some beach work near his owner Trevor Delroy's property in Western Australia. "He's a seven-year-old now that has had a history of injuries but he's been in work for around six months and has had a really good foundation," trainer Pat Carey said. "He had a jump-out at Pakenham a fortnight ago and I'm happy with how he handled himself there and how he's come through the trial." He added: "He's been really sound since he came back and I'm really happy with him so we'll just keep our fingers crossed." Carey has nominated Ethiopia for the Gr1 Cox Plate, but says his main focus is simply on getting the talented gelding back to winning form. "This whole preparation is just about getting him to return to form and anything else other than that is just hopeful," he said.
