Tramway Next For First Seal

Tuesday, 1st September 2015

Trainer John Thompson has confirmed that top-class mare First Seal (Fastnet Rock-Episode, by Scenic) will resume in Saturday's Gr2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) at Randwick after pleasing in an exhibition gallop alongside stable-mate Hooked at Rosehill on the weekend. "They were just here for a day out. They weren't here to run any time," Thompson told AAP. "They pretty much just cruised up the straight. It was just to give them a trip away and to bring her along a bit more after we missed a couple of days work last week." He added: "She's had a solid gallop through the week, and this today will bring her right back up to the mark so she'll be ready to go in the Tramway." Thompson said First Seal will not be tested beyond a mile this preparation, believing running her over further negates her brilliant sprint. "When I step her up in distance and stretch her work out it just seems to take that turn of foot away from her a little bit," he said. "I think she goes better when kept to a mile, kept a little bit on the fresh side, and when you ask her to go she shows that bang turn of foot." He added: "So that's the plan this prep. Keep her to 1400m and a mile." First Seal remains on a path towards the Gr1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick on 3 October, unless wet tracks in Sydney force connections to take her south for the spring. "She'll go to the Tramway first-up then two weeks into the George Main and two weeks into the Epsom," he said, adding, "unless we got bad weather in Sydney and the tracks were very heavy. She doesn't handle that so we would change tack and go to Melbourne and run in races like the Sir Rupert Clarke, Toorak into the Myer. But at this stage the weather is great in Sydney so we'll stick to the Epsom path."
