Derby Goal For Werther Sibling

Thursday, 3rd September 2015

Connections are hoping that Gobstopper, the younger brother of dual Gr2 winning New Zealand galloper Werther, can develop into a Victoria Derby contender when he launches his spring campaign in the Listed Wanganui Guineas (1340m) on Saturday, reports theinformant.co.nz. By Tavistock out of the Zabeel mare Bagalollies, Gobstopper is raced by the same ownership group as his older sibling and is also prepared by the same trainer in Opaki horseman Andrew Campbell. The 3YO, who had just the one start as a juvenile when finishing fourth back in February, has prepared for his first-up assignment with a close-up second at the Foxton trials earlier this month. "We like the horse," Campbell said. "It'll be a bit of a query on the wet track, but he goes pretty well and we've got a lot of time for him." Werther demonstrated his staying talent earlier this year when winning the Gr2 Eagle Farm Cup (2200m) as well as finishing runner-up in both the Queensland and South Australian Derbys, and Campbell has no doubt Gobstopper possesses similar ability. "This bloke is an out and out stayer and he'll get better with time," he said. "We've thrown him in at the deep end this weekend, but we do rate him highly." He added: "I'd like to think he'll develop into a Derby type. We've nominated him for the Victoria Derby, but that's a bit of a dream at this stage. He might turn out to be better in the autumn and target the New Zealand Derby or Australian Derby. The further they go, the better he'll be."
