Sooboog Breaks Through

Thursday, 3rd September 2015

Million dollar colt Sooboog, a full brother to Gr1-winning mare Snitzerland, finally got off the mark at fourth time of asking when winning the Tab.com.au Handicap (1100m) at Canterbury Park yesterday. Following a calamitous start to his spring campaign when allowed to run despite injuring himself in the starting gates at Gosford two weeks ago, the talented son of Snitzel showed he was back on track when scoring a tough nose victory over fellow colts Deploy (Fastnet Rock) and Realise Potential (Bernardini). Prepared by the leading triumvirate of John, Wayne and Michael Hawkes, Sooboog races in the familiar yellow and blue colours of Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum who paid $1.5 million for him at the 2014 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Arrowfield Stud. Co-trainer Michael Hawkes was pleased with the performance and said the stable could now focus on preparing the blue blooded colt for some of the major stakes races over the carnival. "It was a good tough win, but the most important thing is that we've got him back on track," a relieved Hawkes said. "The Coolmore [Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes] is still his long term goal, but we'll just take him along quietly." The stallion-making Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) will be run at Flemington on 31 October.
