Chautauqua Vulnerable: Hawkes

Friday, 4th September 2015

Co-trainer Wayne Hawkes believes that star sprinter Chautauqua (Encosta de Lago-Lovely Jubly, by Lion Hunter) could be vulnerable when he resumes in Saturday's Gr2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley, reports Racing.com. Last season's Gr1 TJ Smith Stakes winner has drawn barrier 12 in a capacity field of 15 and Hawkes says the task confronting the 5YO should not be underestimated. "He's never been over 1000, he's never raced at Moonee Valley and he's drawn a terrible gate so he's got a few question marks to overcome," Hawkes said. "Had he drawn a better barrier he'd be able to sit three lengths closer in the run." He added: "It's the difference between winning and losing drawing bad barriers, but the horse is great." Chautauqua, who races in the blue and gold lightning bolt silks of prominent owner Rupert Legh, is being aimed at the $1 million Gr1 Darley Classic (1200m) at Flemington on 7 November en route to his long-term target, the Gr1 Hong Kong Sprint (1200m) at Sha Tin on 13 December.
