Lucia Ready To Defend Crown

Friday, 4th September 2015

Newcastle trainer Kris Lees is quietly confident that outstanding mare Lucia Valentina (Savabeel-Staryn Glenn, by Montjeu) can successfully defend her title when she resumes in the Gr2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on Saturday, reports racingnsw.com.au. "She appears to be going every bit as well as this time last year," Lees said. "I'd say she's in similar form on the track in her work." He added: "I think she can repeat last year if the race is run to suit her. She's a natural back marker and needs things to go her way but I'm happy with her." While Lucia Valentina performs well on soft tracks (Randwick is currently rated a 'Soft 5'), Lees is hoping the forecast showers arrive which will enhance her prospects even further. "I doubt we're going to get that same heavy track as last year, but the wetter the better for her on Saturday," Lees said. Lees also ruled out another shot at the Melbourne Cup with the 5YO who finished in 13th place last year. "She won't go to two miles [3200m] this preparation, but she could go to the Caulfield Cup or the Cox Plate," he said.
