Orbec To Relish Distance In Wyong Gold Cup
Trainer John Thompson is confident that highly regarded import Orbec (Le Havre-Langrune, by Fasliyev) can break through for his first Australian win in today's Listed Wyong Gold Cup (2080m). The former French galloper made an excellent debut for Thompson when finishing a close second to Beyond Thankful over 1800m at Rosehill 20 days ago, and the Randwick horseman says the 5YO has taken improvement from the run. "The step up in distance and the good barrier makes him a big hope in the cup," Thompson told racingnsw.com.au. "After that he will go to the Newcastle Cup, then The Metropolitan [Gr1] then he will be off to Melbourne for the Caulfield Cup. He has also been nominated for the Melbourne Cup." Thompson is adamant that Orbec will stay the Melbourne Cup distance but wonders whether he is seasoned enough to handle a Cup preparation. "I know he is tough but while he is a five-year-old here he is only a four-year-old to European time," Thompson said. "I guess we will find out as we go along." Tye Angland has retained the ride on Orbec who has drawn barrier two in the field of 15. Click here to view Wyong Gold Cup field.
