Rachel's Valentina Wins Gr1 Spinaway Stakes
At Saratoga racecourse in the US, triple Gr1-winning Darley shuttler & US Eclipse Award-winning stallion Bernardini (A.P. Indy-Cara Rafaela, by Quiet American) celebrated a Gr1 triumph when beautifully related 2YO filly Rachel's Valentina (Bernardini-Rachel Alexandra, by Medaglia d'Oro) scored by 1-length for trainer Todd Pletcher in the US$350,000 Gr1 Spinaway Stakes (7 furlongs) for 2YO fillies, over fellow juvenile fillies Tap To It (Tapit-Leave Me Alone, by Bold Badgett) & Constellation (Bellamy Road-For Royalty, by Not for Love). Rachel's Valentina, who is the second foal of champion US mare Rachel Alexandra, maintained her perfect record of 2 wins from 2 starts for US$259,800 earnings. "I thought she ran fantastic," Pletcher told Blood Horse. "I've always felt like the farther she goes, the better she gets, and I think that's proven to be true." The Stonestreet Stables-owned Rachel's Valentina is being aimed at the Gr1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Keeneland on 31 October, with either the Gr1 Frizette Stakes at Belmont Park or the Gr1 Alcibiades Stakes at Keeneland the logical options before then. "I haven't really thought about (what's next). I'll talk to the Stonestreet people and see," Pletcher said. "I think she'll have one more race if she's doing good." North American Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra is best known for her exceptional 3YO campaign of 2009, in which she won the Gr1 Kentucky Oaks by more than 20-lengths before being purchased by the late Jess Jackson's Stonestreet Stables.
