Marky Mark Back This Weekend

Tuesday, 8th September 2015

Last season's Champion New Zealand 2YO Marky Mark (Makfi-My My Maree, by Testa Rossa) will make his return to racing in Saturday's Listed Tavistock Northland Breeders' Stakes at Ruakaka, reports theinformant.co.nz. New Zealand's wet weather has hampered the early part of Marky Mark's spring preparation, meaning trainer Moira Murdoch has had to find other ways of building up the Makfi gelding's fitness. "He's been suffering from a lack of trials," Murdoch said. "We took him to Ruakaka for a gallop on the course proper on Thursday. That was about the best we could do with him instead of a trial." Despite the headaches caused by trial abandonments, Murdoch says the Gr1 Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes winner is forward enough to be competitive on Saturday. "He's coming along really well and I think he can run well on Saturday," the Waiuku trainer said. "It's only 1200 metres and he'll improve for the run, but I think a lot of the others will be in the same boat. We're hoping for a good performance." Murdoch said Marky Mark will definitely be aimed at the Gr2 Hawke's Bay Guineas, and while he holds an entry in the Gr1 NZ 2,000 Guineas at Riccarton in November, she says a trip to Australia is more appealing. "I'm not terribly keen on Riccarton and the 2000 Guineas, it's a long way back from there," she said. "We're looking at Australia, but it depends on Hawke's Bay first and we are keeping every option open."
