Cox Plate First Acceptances

Wednesday, 9th September 2015

First declarations closed yesterday for the Gr1 Cox Plate (2040m) with a total of 92 horses in the race for the $3 million feature at Moonee Valley on 24 October. Six internationals remain in contention including three horses from the Irish stable of Aidan O'Brien who prepared Adelaide to win last year's Cox Plate - the first international winner in the 95 year history of the race. Gr1 Secretariat Stakes winner Highland Reel heads the overseas contingent while the Peter Chapple-Hyam trained Arod and French galloper Gailo Chop also confirmed their interest. Ballot exempt for winning the Australian Derby in April, dual Classic winner Mongolian Khan was among the first acceptances along with Tasmanian cult figure The Cleaner, who also guaranteed himself a start for the second consecutive year with his win in last Saturday's Gr2 Dato' Tan Chin Nam Stakes. Happy Trails and Fawkner were among the local brigade to pay the acceptance fee, with both hoping to go one better on their second placings in the 2013 and 2014 editions of the race. The pair are expected to clash this weekend when they meet in the Gr1 Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington. The current Tab.com.au market sees Highland Reel, Kermadec and Pornichet sharing favouritism ay $11, ahead of Contributer, Criterion, Hartnell and Fawkner at $15. Second declarations for the Cox Plate close at 12 noon on Tuesday 22 September. Click here to view first acceptances.
