First Seal To Miss Spring

Wednesday, 9th September 2015

Meanwhile, top-class mare First Seal (Fastnet Rock-Episode, by Scenic) has joined Vancouver on the spring casualty list after being diagnosed with the equine equivalent of an in-grown toenail, reports Racing.com. The condition, known as a 'teratoma', showed up following an MRI scan yesterday and will require surgery. "We need to cut it out," trainer John Thompson told Melbourne's Radio Sport National yesterday. "She'll be out of play for three or four weeks having to get that done which pretty much puts us out of the spring." He added: "With the quality horse she is, we are not going to push and try and get there. We'll probably just pull the pin on the spring and get it right and come back in the autumn." Thompson said the prospects of First Seal racing again were very good. "I asked the question of the surgeon and he said, 'I've done a lot of them and 100 per cent of them come back and race again successfully'," he said.
