Green Desert Euthanized

Thursday, 10th September 2015

Top international sire Green Desert (Danzig-Foreign Courier, by Sir Ivor) has been euthanized at the age of 32, according to a statement from Shadwell Estate Company and Darley Stud Management, reports Blood Horse. "The increasing toll of old age and infirmity led to the mutual agreement that this giant of the stallion ranks was euthanized in the peaceful and familiar surroundings of the Nunnery Stud following veterinary advice," Shadwell said in a release. Trained by Sir Michael Stoute, the US-bred Green Desert was a winner of the 1986 Gr1 July Cup before going on to forge a reputation as a sire of sires with top-class horses such as Cape Cross, Invincible Spirit, Oasis Dream, Desert Prince, and Shinko Forest. Stoute said in a statement: "Green Desert was a horse I loved training, he had a huge amount of vitality and personality. He was a good miler, for Dancing Brave was the only horse to beat him in the Guineas, but his exceptional speed meant he was able to win group races over six furlongs. He has left a great legacy, and one that I think will become larger and larger over time."
