Kirramosa Flying Towards Epsom

Thursday, 10th September 2015

John Sargent has designs on sending Kirramosa (Alamosa-Freyja, by Danske) to Melbourne as a two-time Gr1 winner, reports NZ Racing Desk. The Randwick trainer has endured a frustrating time with the New Zealand-bred mare since she triumphed in the Gr1 VRC Oaks as a spring 3YO in 2014. The Flemington classic was her last win with a series of setbacks, including a hairline fracture of a pedal bone, restricting her to just six subsequent appearances. However, Sargent has been buoyed by Kirramosa's two runs back from a spell with a first-up fifth at Rosehill followed by an identical placing against a competitive Gr2 Tramway Stakes field last weekend. "It's great to see her back and injury free," Sargent said. "She's flying now and she'll run next in the George Main Stakes on Saturday week." While the conditions of that race won't be ideal for Kirramosa, she will be advantaged by the return to handicap racing in the $1 million Gr1 Epsom Handicap on October 3. "The George Main is at weight-for-age, which won't suit her, but next time in the Epsom she'll have a nice light weight," Sargent said. "The Epsom mile is a tough one around Randwick, it's more like 2000 metres and that will suit her. Everything is going to plan and after the Epsom we'll head to Melbourne." Kirramosa has 50.5kg in the Caulfield Cup with the Melbourne Cup weights to be released on September 15.
