Irish Officials Pray Weather Forecaster Has It Wrong

Friday, 11th September 2015

Despite officials having put tomorrow's Gr1 Irish Champion Stakes back by 65 minutes to preserve the best ground for the elite race at Leopardstown, predicted heavy rain over the next 48 hours could scuttle the chances of key heavyweight contenders starting in what was shaping as one of the best races of the year. Among that brigade are race favourite Golden Horn, defeated for the first time by Arabian Queen in last month's Gr1 Juddmonte International Stakes after a string of top flight wins, and quadruple Gr1 winner Gleneagles. While Golden Horn is expected to stand his ground unless the track becomes officially soft, less certainty surrounds dual Gr1 Guineas hero Gleneagles, with trainer Aidan O'Brien indicating he will just wait to see how the forecast wet weather impacts the track. The Ballydoyle stable also has Highland Reel and Found among its entries.
