Kinglike Wins Gr2 Danehill Stakes
At Flemington in Melbourne, Darley's former Champion Australian Sire Exceed And Excel (Danehill-Patrona, by Lomond) added a Group success when exciting 3YO colt Kinglike (Exceed and Excel-Royal Glow, by King's Best) scored by 1.25-lengths for trainer Peter Moody in the $200,000 Gr2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) for 3YOs, over fellow 3YO colts Raphael's Cat (Redoute's Choice-Cat by the Tale, by Tale of the Cat) & Ready For Victory (More Than Ready-Crillon, by Zabeel). This was Kinglike's maiden stakes victory and took his record to 2 wins and 1 placing from 3 starts for $211,400 earnings. A homebred for David Moodie's Contract Racing, Kinglike is the fourth foal to race for King's Best mare Royal Glow who has also produced Listed Manfred Stakes winner Mirage (Hard Spun). Champion jockey Glen Boss was effusive in his praise of the 3YO whom he described as a top-class animal. "The first time I got on his back about a month ago, I kept telling everyone - I've found one, I think I've found a really good colt," Boss told Racing.com. "I'm in love with him - he's top drawer." He added: "He runs some sectionals on the track that only very, very good horses do and he does it like he's cantering and pulls up like he hasn't been around." Prominent owner-breeder David Moodie went one step further than Boss, describing Kinglike as potentially the best horse he has ever had. "It's what every breeder aspires to achieve - a colt like this. He's got the pedigree, he's got the type and the performance is the thing to follow and hopefully he'll go on from today," said Moodie. "I haven't really had a horse like this, we wanted to keep a lid on it but probably for the last six weeks he's done extraordinary things in trackwork."
