Mondialiste Wins Gr1 Woodbine Stakes
At Woodbine in Canada, former Coolmore shuttler and triple Gr1-winning champion European sire Galileo (Sadler's Wells-Urban Sea, by Miswaki) celebrated a Gr1 success when 5YO Irish bred entire Mondialiste (Galileo-Occupandiste, by Kaldoun) scored by 0.5-length for trainer David O'Meara in the US$1 million Gr1 Woodbine Stakes (8 furlongs) for 3YO+, over 6YO US bred entire Lea (First Samurai-Greenery, by Galileo) & 7YO Irish bred gelding Obviously (Choisir-Leala, by Montjeu). This was the first Gr1 victory for Mondialiste who took his record to 4 wins (including the Gr3 Strensall Stakes at York) and 8 placings (including the Gr1 Prix Jean Prat) from 15 starts. Mondialiste became the first Irish-bred horse to win the Woodbine in its 19 editions, and in the process earned himself an automatic entry in the Breeders' Cup Mile at Keeneland on 31 October. "We'll have to consider it now," O'Meara told Blood Horse. "Today was the big race that we had in mind, stepping up to Group 1 level." He added: "The Breeders' Cup will be under consideration, but we'll just take the horse home and see how he is. We thought we'd come here with the long straight and the big track. I'm not quite sure whether Keeneland would suit him as well."
