No Windsor Park For Ryan Mark

Tuesday, 15th September 2015

Trainer John Morell has confirmed that star Kiwi sprinter Ryan Mark will tackle the $40,000 open 1200m at Hastings on Saturday, in preference to the Gr1 Windsor Park Plate over 1600m, reports NZ Racing Desk. Ryan Mark was not nominated for the Windsor Park Plate but a brave run for second at his last start, behind Kawi, in the Gr1 Makfi Challenge Stakes (1400m), prompted Morell to consider a late entry for the second leg of the Hawke's Bay triple crown. Late entries for the Windsor Park Plate close today.  "I did think about it but we have decided to keep him to sprinting in the meantime," Morell said.  "The race [Windsor Park] wasn't on the plan and it would be only his third start this campaign and might have been a bit hard on him." He added: "I think he will get a mile all right, as he can relax if he's left alone, but that can come later. "If he goes well on Saturday, he can come back to Hastings for the 1400m [$70,000 Spring Sprint] on the last day." Ryan Mark, a Thorn Park 5YO, has an impressive record with six wins and three seconds from 11 starts and even when unplaced has never been beaten by more than 2.5 lengths. He had no luck in the Makfi Challenge Stakes, being caught wide, but comfortably held second. "We were pretty happy with his run and he has done well since," said Morell, who has a dairy farm based just north of Hamilton. "But Kawi won really easily.  The more you watch the replay, the easier it looks [for Kawi]."
