Ivanhowe To Launch Cup Campaign On Saturday
Top-class German-bred stayer Our Ivanhowe will launch his Melbourne Cup campaign in Saturday's Gr3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield, reports racenet. The 6YO son of Soldier Hollow, who has not raced since finishing an encouraging 7th at his Australian debut in the Gr3 RA Lee Stakes (1600m) at Morphettville in May, showed he was ready for his return to the races when recording an easy 6-length barrier trial win at Cranbourne on Friday. "He's come through the trial in good shape and I'm pleased with him," said co-trainer Lee Freedman, who prepares the gelding in partnership with his brother Anthony. "It won't be easy with 60 kilo's on his back but it's a good starting point." He added: "I've changed his work around the last three weeks. He's doing longer pieces of work and he's responding well to it." Freedman said that Our Ivanhowe would be better suited beyond Saturday's 2000m assignment, but expects him to run well nonetheless. "His fitness improves by the day, he's not really a 2000 metre horse but I expect him to run well," Freedman said. "Any give in the ground at Caulfield will be a help." Formerly trained by Jean-Pierre Carvalho, Our Ivanhowe is a dual Gr1 winner of the Grosser Preis von Bayern (2400m) and Grosser Preis von Bayern, in which he defeated subsequent German Derby winner Sea The Moon. Testament to Our Ivanhowe's class is the fact that he polled third behind Sea The Moon and Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist in Germany's Horse of the Year award earlier this year.
