Lucia To Run In George Main If Wet
Meanwhile, Protectionist's top-class stable-mate Lucia Valentina (Savabeel-Staryn Glenn, by Montjeu) will also continue her spring campaign in Saturday's Gr1 George Main Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick. The dual Gr1-winning mare made an eye-catching return in the Gr2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) at Randwick 11 days ago, when she flashed home for sixth (beaten just 1.6-lengths) and recorded the fastest closing sectionals of the day. "I'm very happy with her," Lees told Melbourne's Radio Sport National yesterday. "She had the best sectionals of the day I think when she ran in the Tramway." He added: "She has a tendency to race a little flat second-up, but if it rains she will run in the George Main...the alternative would be that she would have another week between runs and then come down [to Melbourne] for the Underwood Stakes [Gr1, 1800m]." Lees is yet to determine Lucia Valentina's primary spring objective, but said the two options were the Cox Plate and the Caulfield Cup. "It would be one or the other, but I'm leaning more towards the Cox Plate at this stage," he said. "I think she is really effective at 2000m, but we will make those decisions as we get a bit closer."
